I’ve been readign contradicting information on the treatment of hemorrhoids lately. On the one hand, a lot of sources say that sitz baths are really helpful and they recommend doing them 2-4 times daily. On the other hand, a lot of sources say that you shouldn’t sit on the toilet for too long because that place more pressure on the hemorrhoids. I’ve been doing the baths and the latter seems to be right. I feel a lot more discomfort and the situation seems to be worsening. Am I doing anything incorrect??

The sitz baths are just symptomatic treatment. They’re supposed to decrease the inflammation and soothe the area. But, if your hemorrhoids are severe, you’re better off skipping the sitz baths. Perhaps you really are putting too much pressure on the hemorrhoids (especially if they’re external).

I’m sure your doctor told you about this already, but what worked for me the best was using bulk laxatives like Metamucil fiber drink. It softens the stool and prevents constipation, thereby decreasing the pressure on the hemorrhoids. And I’m sure you also have Preparation HC cream, which decreases the inflammation.

But, it sounds like your hemorrhoids might be severe. Perhaps having them removed might be a excellent option for you.

In any case, I’d say stop doing those baths for now, and work more with the fiber supplements and the cream. If you’re not feeling any pain relief with the baths, it makes sense to stop.
